We’re looking for gardeners!
| We continue to seek help for an Olde Berlin Town front-yard garden tour from 2-4pm, Saturday, September 19, 2020. (Our rain date is 2-4pm, Sunday September 20, 2020.) We need: “Garden Hosts”’ to introduce visitors to their garden. Interested but don’t want to commit to being around during the tour or are a little shy? Please be in touch. We’ll find another way to communicate with visitors. Driveways that we can use during the tour, to set up informational tables. People who want to share garden-related ideas, but need a yard or driveway space to set up their display. Our plan is to identify a number of gardens for neighbours to visit from the sidewalk while the “Garden Host” introduces the garden and fields questions. Garden hosts may identify plants and explain their selection process. Or talk about their rain garden. Or measures undertaken to support bees. Or container gardening … You dig? We’ll maintain and encourage a safe socially-distanced visit throughout. Our goal is to encourage neighbourly connections and a love of gardening. Doors Open Waterloo Region Goes Digital! August 22 to September 19, 2020
Online | Free! Sharing our stories and exploring our backyard continues to be important while practicing physical distancing. Recognizing these challenging times, Doors Open Waterloo Region has pivoted to offer an entirely digital experience in 2020. Doors Open allows curious residents and visitors alike to tour noteworthy buildings, interesting places and heritage sites in Waterloo Region, many of which are not regularly open to the public. This year Doors Open Waterloo Region will provide meaningful qualitative experiences, delivered through video storytelling, in celebration of our diverse community culture, heritage and architecture. Each video episode will be 5 to 10 minutes in length and will premier online and on Rogers Television each week from late August through September 19, 2020. Join the Doors Open Waterloo Region mailing list to receive updates and notifications when episodes are released. Virtual Emancipation Day Presented by the Ontario Heritage Trust and Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site
| August 1, 2020 Online | Free Emancipation Day commemorates the Abolition of Slavery Act, which became law on August 1, 1834. This act freed more than 800,000 people of African descent throughout the British Empire. Since then, Emancipation Day has been celebrated on or near August 1 each year. It is an important expression of identity for the Black community, and a reminder of the continuing struggle faced by people of African descent towards a more inclusive, diverse society. This year’s Emancipation Day events include interviews with Natasha Henry (educator, curriculum consultant and President of the Ontario Black History Society), Wanda Thomas Bernard (Canadian senator, social worker and community activist) and Preston Chase (director of the short film Mr. Emancipation). Enjoy musical performances, including The Heritage Singers Canada and the Grineage Family, as well as a tour of Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site.
