City seeks input on proposed Downtown Cycling Grid (Updated)

November 2, 2020 By Leslie

November 2, 2020

Update: In response to feedback from the neighbourhood, Active Transportation Planning Project Manager, Darren Kropf has provided an updated FAQ document regarding Margaret Avenue which includes three additional options for the alignment of the Multi-Use Trail along Margaret Avenue.

October 31, 2020

Update: Active Transportation Planning (City of Kitchener) is proposing a Multi-Use Trail (MUP) along Margaret and Otto, between Victoria and Frederick, as part of a downtown cycling grid. Details are available at https://www.engagewr.ca/downtown-cycling-grid where you are welcome to register and participate via a survey (open until November 11th), or at two upcoming Virtual Open Houses on November 3rd and 4th.  Neighbourhood-specific information is available at https://www.engagewr.ca/…/margaret-avenue-multi-use-trail and Pages 11, 12, 22 and 23 of https://www.engagewr.ca/16695/widgets/65742/documents/39880.

Thank you! to Active Transportation Planning Project Manager, Darren Kropf, for developing a set of Frequently Asked Questions with us, in advance of the Virtual Open House sessions.

Please note that some revisions of the plan are already in the works.  The pages 11, 12, 22 and 23 above are being revised.  They do not yet show the reduced impact on the front yards of 9-55 Margaret Ave and 108 Queen St N as discussed in the FAQ.

Further design change is also being considered in light of the cancellation of Avenue M (the development at 30-40 Margaret Avenue).

October 18, 2020

Original Post: The City of Kitchener’s strategic plan includes the construction of a continuous and protected cycling grid that connects adjacent neighbourhoods to the downtown. The grid is designed to target all ages and abilities of people who would like to bike more often but currently don’t feel safe riding downtown.

Following consultation of more than 4,000 people through the strategic plan and Cycling and Trails Master Plan, a final round of consultation is currently underway. Several streets are included in the grid, including Margaret Avenue and more. The grid connects to popular trails like the Spur Line Trail, Iron Horse Trail and the Great Trail, providing a new, safe and convenient way for people to access all that downtown has to offer.

See the proposed designs and share your feedback at https://www.engagewr.ca/downtown-cycling-grid

COVID-19 & Community Safety

COVID-19 updates in our community

From the website of the The City of Kitchener:

Posted On Wednesday March 25, 2020

As another step in their co-ordinated emergency response, today, the City of Kitchener, together with the Region of Waterloo and local municipalities, declared a State of Emergency in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The declaration is a precaution being taken by the City of Kitchener, and its local municipal partners, which raises public awareness regarding the gravity of the current pandemic situation and gives the City more speed and flexibility to make important future decisions to protect the safety and wellbeing of residents.

“This is an important decision for the future health and wellbeing of our entire community,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “This declaration gives our municipality a few more tools in our toolbox to respond to the spread of this virus in our community.”

The decision to declare a State of Emergency, made by Mayor Vrbanovic, was made in consultation with Waterloo Region’s public health experts, the City’s emergency management team and members of Kitchener City Council.

“This is not a decision I’ve taken lightly, and it is not one I’ve made on my own,” said Mayor Vrbanovic. “We’re all in this together and Kitchener remains committed to working collaboratively and co-ordinating closely with our municipal partners to not only make decisions quickly and effectively, but to co-ordinate our response so that there is consistency for residents no matter where they may live in the Region.”

As the pandemic situation continues to evolve, Kitchener has executed its pandemic plan and its emergency management team continues to respond quickly to ongoing direction from the federal and provincial governments, and Region of Waterloo public health experts.

“Our community can be confident that their city has a robust emergency management framework and pandemic plan in place, which we are executing on quickly,” said Dan Chapman, the City’s Chief Administrative Officer and Chair of the City’s Emergency Operations Centre Management Team. “Our emergency management team continues to meet daily to understand and resolve challenges quickly and anticipate the key decisions that will need to be made in the days and weeks ahead.”

January 13, 2020 By Leslie

137 Queen Street North Kitchener
137 Queen Street North, Kitchener Ontario
From a calendar created by Wendy Collishaw and Bert Williams

The City of Kitchener is now accepting grant applications from residents looking to restore or conserve their heritage property. Eligible properties include individually designated properties under the Ontario Heritage Act and properties located in the City’s four heritage conservation districts: Upper Doon, Victoria Park Area, St. Mary’s and Civic Centre Neighbourhood.

Grants are available to cover up to half the cost of eligible projects, from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $3,000. Applications for 2020 are due Tuesday March 31.

For more information, go to www.kitchener.ca/heritagefunding.

Taken from the calendar description of this property:
Originally the frame cottage of Nicholas Zeiger who built his home in 1852. Mr. Zeiger was a brick mason who established his factory in his backyard. In 1858 John Dauberger bought the property and covered the home with bricks puddled by hand on the site. The vitality of this simple, practical Georgian cottage continues to the present day.
